Westpac bank feed for Xero: import Westpac statements as a live feed

Westpac feeds eligible business banking facilities to Xero, but Business Credit Cards and Business Term Deposits are excluded from third-party providers other than MYOB and SapphireOne. A Westpac business credit card therefore has no Xero feed available at all, which is why the question recurs in Xero's own community. StatementClear posts those Westpac statements into Xero as live bank feed lines, deduped and balance-checked.

Westpac's exclusion is the sharpest of the big four, and the most quietly expensive. Westpac states that Business Credit Cards and Business Term Deposits are not available to third-party service providers except MYOB and SapphireOne. Read that carefully: it is not that the feed is unreliable or that the application was rejected. A Westpac business credit card has no Xero feed to apply for, while the same card would feed MYOB. It is a competitor carve-out, and it lands on the single account type with the highest transaction count in most small businesses. Every card transaction is keyed in or imported by hand, every month, indefinitely. StatementClear turns the Westpac card statement into a live Xero feed instead.

Where the native Westpac feed falls short

Westpac feeds eligible business banking facilities to Xero, set up from Westpac Online Banking on desktop after registering with the accounting software first. Two categories are excluded by name: Business Credit Cards and Business Term Deposits are not available to third-party providers other than MYOB and SapphireOne. Activation takes up to two business days.

A business credit card is the worst account to reconcile manually and the one Westpac excludes, which is why this page exists. Card statements run on a statement cycle rather than a calendar month, so the file you download rarely lines up with your Xero period and the closing balance is a cycle balance, not a month-end one. Westpac's card export also records spending as a positive figure and payments as negative, the reverse of what a bank account statement does, so importing it with a bank account's mapping inverts every line and turns the balance the wrong way round. StatementClear handles the sign convention explicitly, checks the statement's own closing balance before posting, and dedupes against lines already in the account, so a cycle that straddles two months posts once and only once.

The manual way, every month

  • Log in and export a statement (and hope the format didn't change)
  • Reformat columns, dates and signs until Xero's importer accepts it
  • Upload the CSV into the right account and pray nothing doubled up
  • Eyeball the balance, fix what broke, repeat next month

And after all that, it still isn't a feed - it's a one-off import you'll redo next month.

The StatementClear way: a real feed

Upload the statement and it posts into Xero as a live bank feed through Xero's Bank Feeds API - deduped, balance-checked and ready to reconcile. Not another file to import. Converters hand you a CSV; this arrives in Xero the way a bank feed does.

  1. Step 1

    Connect Xero

Link your org and pick the account that is missing transactions.

  2. Step 2

    Upload your Westpac statement

PDF, CSV or Excel - whatever you can export. Map the columns once and we remember the mapping.

  3. Step 3

    We check it first

Duplicates are skipped, the running balance is verified, and sign errors are caught before anything posts.

  4. Step 4

    It lands as a feed

Clean lines arrive in Xero through the Bank Feeds API, ready to reconcile.

Questions about Westpac and Xero

Because Westpac does not offer one. Westpac states that Business Credit Cards and Business Term Deposits are not available for third-party service providers except MYOB and SapphireOne. It is an exclusion, not a fault, so there is nothing to reapply for and no outage to wait out. StatementClear posts the card statement into Xero as live bank feed lines instead, with the sign convention handled and the closing balance checked.

Eligible business banking facilities, set up from Westpac Online Banking on desktop after you have registered with your accounting software first. Business Credit Cards and Business Term Deposits are the named exclusions. Allow up to two business days for the link to activate once you have completed the Westpac side.

Card statements usually record spending as a positive number and payments as negative, the opposite of a bank account statement. Import one with a bank account's column mapping and every line lands the wrong way round, along with the balance. StatementClear treats the sign convention as part of the mapping, set once per account, and verifies the result against the statement's own closing balance before anything posts.

Not to StatementClear. Card cycles rarely align to a calendar month, and the risk is double-posting where two cycles overlap a period. Every upload is deduped against the lines already in the account, so an overlapping cycle posts the new transactions and nothing else.

Where this comes from

Everything above about what Xero's native feed covers, what its manual import accepts and how feed lines reach a bank account comes from Xero's own documentation. The relevant pages are below, so you can check the claim rather than take it.

  • About bank feedsXero's own account of which feeds exist, how they connect and what they do not cover.
  • Import a CSV bank statementThe manual import: the formats it accepts, and how it handles lines it has seen before.
