Amex bank feed for Xero: for the cards and markets Xero cannot cover
American Express has direct Xero feeds in several markets, including the UK through Open Banking since the old feed retired in November 2023. Eligibility depends on the card and the country, and a feed only runs forward from connection. StatementClear covers the cards and history it leaves behind.
If your Amex card has a working Xero feed, this page is not for you. It is for the corporate card that is not eligible, the market Xero does not cover, and the hole left behind when the old UK feed was switched off in November 2023. StatementClear turns the statements Amex already gives you into a live bank feed in Xero, ready to reconcile.
Where American Express feeds fall short
American Express has direct feeds with Xero in several markets, including the UK (through Open Banking since the old feed was retired in November 2023), the US, Australia and New Zealand. Coverage depends on the card and the country - some corporate and older card accounts are not eligible, and a feed only runs forward from the day it connects, so history and non-covered cards still need manual work.
Amex exports follow credit-card convention: charges are positive, payments and credits negative - the mirror image of a bank export - so an import with the signs unchecked posts every line backwards. The online activity download carries no running balance column, which means nothing in the file proves it is complete, and the download window is limited (for many accounts, roughly the last six billing statements), so older history means working from PDF statements. Statements for accounts with supplementary cardholders group spend by card rather than by date, which scrambles a straight chronological import. StatementClear reads the statement, normalises the signs for a credit card account, checks the result against the statement's closing figure where one exists, and posts the lines into Xero as a live feed. Coverage is regional as well as card-by-card: at the time of writing there is no direct Amex feed at all for business cards issued in several markets - Hong Kong among them - so those cards run on manual imports indefinitely.
The manual way, every month
- Log in and export a statement (and hope the format didn't change)
- Reformat columns, dates and signs until Xero's importer accepts it
- Upload the CSV into the right account and pray nothing doubled up
- Eyeball the balance, fix what broke, repeat next month
And after all that, it still isn't a feed - it's a one-off import you'll redo next month.
The StatementClear way: a real feed
Upload the statement and it posts into Xero as a live bank feed through Xero's Bank Feeds API - deduped, balance-checked and ready to reconcile. Not another file to import. Converters hand you a CSV; this arrives in Xero the way a bank feed does.
- Step 1
Connect Xero
Link your org and pick the account that has no feed.
- Step 2
Upload your American Express statement
PDF, CSV or Excel - whatever you can export. Map the columns once and we remember the mapping.
- Step 3
We check it first
Duplicates are skipped, the running balance is verified, and sign errors are caught before anything posts.
- Step 4
It lands as a feed
Clean lines arrive in Xero through the Bank Feeds API, ready to reconcile.
