Starling bank feed for Xero: for the accounts the feed cannot connect

Starling business accounts, including EUR and USD, connect to Xero from the Starling Marketplace and update in real time. Personal and joint accounts cannot connect at all, and Spaces are largely ignored. StatementClear turns the statements Starling does provide into live Xero feed lines.

Starling's business feed is one of the better native options, which is exactly why the people searching this page are stuck: they run a business through a personal or joint Starling account, which the feed does not cover - a permanent gap, not a teething problem - or they need history from before the feed was switched on. StatementClear turns the statements Starling does provide into a live feed in Xero: deduped, balance-checked and ready to reconcile.

Where the native Starling feed falls short

Starling's native feed is one of the good ones: business accounts, including EUR and USD business accounts, connect from the Starling Marketplace and update Xero in real time. The gaps are personal and joint accounts, which cannot connect at all, and Spaces, which the feed largely ignores.

Starling's own exports are decent raw material: the CSV carries a signed amount and a running balance column, which makes line-by-line balance verification possible - something many bank exports do not allow. The awkwardness is structural. Personal and joint accounts cannot connect to the native feed at all, so anyone trading through one faces a manual import every month, indefinitely. Spaces deserve a straight answer: transfers between the main account and a Space never appear in the Xero feed, and Starling does not produce statements for regular Spaces either - so no statement-based tool, StatementClear included, can post what was never exported. If money moves through Spaces, keep business flows in the main account.

The manual way, every month

  • Log in and export a statement (and hope the format didn't change)
  • Reformat columns, dates and signs until Xero's importer accepts it
  • Upload the CSV into the right account and pray nothing doubled up
  • Eyeball the balance, fix what broke, repeat next month

And after all that, it still isn't a feed - it's a one-off import you'll redo next month.

The StatementClear way: a real feed

Upload the statement and it posts into Xero as a live bank feed through Xero's Bank Feeds API - deduped, balance-checked and ready to reconcile. Not another file to import. Converters hand you a CSV; this arrives in Xero the way a bank feed does.

  1. Step 1

    Connect Xero

Link your org and pick the account that is missing transactions.

  2. Step 2

    Upload your Starling Bank statement

PDF, CSV or Excel - whatever you can export. Map the columns once and we remember the mapping.

  3. Step 3

    We check it first

Duplicates are skipped, the running balance is verified, and sign errors are caught before anything posts.

  4. Step 4

    It lands as a feed

Clean lines arrive in Xero through the Bank Feeds API, ready to reconcile.

Questions about Starling Bank and Xero

Not natively - Starling's Xero integration covers business accounts only. StatementClear fills that gap: export the statement from the Starling app as CSV or PDF, upload it, and the lines post into Xero as a live bank feed through Xero's Bank Feeds API, ready to reconcile.

The native feed does not record transfers between your main balance and Spaces, and only payments made directly from a Space reach Xero. Starling lets you download a statement for a Space, so if you track one as its own account in Xero, StatementClear can post that history into it as feed lines.

Keep the periods separate and you will not: post statement history up to the day the native feed started, and let the feed carry on from there. StatementClear also dedupes every upload against what it has already posted, so re-uploading an overlapping statement never doubles lines.

Statements are encrypted in transit and at rest, and we never sell data. The file is read to build feed lines, checked for balance and sign errors, and posted to your Xero org through Xero's Bank Feeds API - that is the whole journey.

Where this comes from

Everything above about what Xero's native feed covers, what its manual import accepts and how feed lines reach a bank account comes from Xero's own documentation. The relevant pages are below, so you can check the claim rather than take it.
