Wise bank feed not working in Xero: causes and fixes

StatementClear7 min read

A Wise feed usually stops in Xero for one of four reasons: someone disconnected it, the currency balance has no matching Xero account, the period you want predates the feed's twelve-month backfill, or the account is a personal Wise account, which cannot connect at all. Only the first is a reconnect away.

Check which of the four it is before reconnecting

Reconnecting is the reflex, and for one of these causes it is the answer. For the other three it changes nothing, and reconnecting on top of already-imported lines is how duplicates get into the ledger. Work out which case you are in first.

  1. Open the bank account in Xero and look at the last statement line date. A feed that stopped on a specific day points at a disconnection.
  2. Compare that date with when the balance was opened in Wise. A gap that runs back further than twelve months is the backfill limit, not a fault.
  3. Check whether the Wise account is a Business account. Personal accounts have no Xero feed, so there is nothing to reconnect.
  4. Count your currency balances against your Xero bank accounts. Each balance needs its own same-currency Xero account, and that needs a multi-currency plan.

Cause 1: the connection was dropped

Wise's Xero connection is held by a user, not by the organisation. Anyone with Standard or Adviser permissions can disconnect it, and changing the Wise account's own permissions can drop it too. Nothing announces this in Xero; the feed simply stops producing lines and the account quietly falls behind.

The fix is to reconnect from the Wise side, then reconcile the gap. Reconnecting does not backfill the missing stretch, so whatever accumulated between the drop and the reconnection is still yours to post. That is the part people miss, and it is why the account still will not balance after a successful reconnect.

Cause 2: a currency balance with no Xero account

The Wise feed is per currency. A EUR balance feeds a EUR Xero bank account, a USD balance feeds a USD one, and there is no combining them. Multi-currency accounts in Xero need a plan that carries multi-currency, so a business holding four balances on a plan that carries one gets a feed for one of them and silence for the rest.

Symptom worth recognising: one Wise balance reconciles perfectly and the others show no lines at all. That is a plan and account-mapping problem, not a broken feed.

Cause 3: the history you need predates the feed

The native feed backfills roughly a year. If you are catching up two or three years of a Wise balance, or picking up an account someone else ran, the feed will never reach back far enough, however many times it is reconnected. Xero's own manual import is the documented fallback, and it is a per-file job that has to be repeated for every period and every currency.

This is the case worth solving properly, because it recurs. Every new currency balance, every account inherited from a previous bookkeeper, and every year-end catch-up hits the same wall.

Cause 4: it is a personal Wise account

A personal Wise account doing business duty has no Xero feed and is not going to get one. It is a common setup: the account was opened before the company existed, the currency balances work, and moving everything to a Business account means new details for everyone who pays you. So the account stays, and its transactions arrive in Xero by hand.

There is no reconnect for this one. The realistic options are moving to a Wise Business account, importing a CSV every month, or feeding the statements you already export.

What to do when reconnecting is not the answer

Three of the four causes end at the same place: Wise gives you a statement, and Xero needs the lines. Xero's manual import turns that into a monthly reformatting job with no duplicate protection and no balance check, which is workable for one account and unworkable across a client base.

StatementClear posts those statements into Xero through the Bank Feeds API instead, so the lines arrive the way feed lines do. Duplicates are skipped, so posting a period the native feed already covered is safe, and the running balance is verified before anything reaches the ledger.

Stop importing Wise statements. Feed them instead.

StatementClear posts the statements you already export into Xero as live bank feed lines, deduped and balance-checked before anything reaches the ledger.
